It’s enough to make Elvis drool. If you like it smoked, charred or grilled, then you need to head on down to The Home of Lo ‘N’ Slow, the new American barbeque joint that has recently opened at 28 Hawker Street in Bowden.
Owner Rik Carr launched his first concept store after a 15-year career in butchery to bring fellow-meat-lovers a true taste of the America grill.
Smoked chicken wings and waygu burgers are Rik’s staples, but there is an extensive menu including pulled pork nachos and sliders, lamb shoulder salad, and the truly eye-popping triple beef, bacon and cheese burger. For the truly devout there is also a brisket burger wrapped up in a Krispy Kreme donut.
His diner also serves as a bar and a butcher shop, allowing patrons to sample a wide range of local South Australian craft beers while choosing which cut of premium, hard-to-find meat to take home for dinner, from wagyu steaks to full sized briskets.
“My vision for The Home of Lo ‘N’ Slow was to create a relaxed American diner experience where people could sample top quality barbeque meats, have a beer and get advice on all things barbeque,” says Rik.
“We are supported on the barbeque by some of Australia’s barbeque champions—including Grant Neal from The Smoking Joint and Simmo Newman from Suck Knuckle Smokers—as well as well-known barbeque chef, Kaneo Boase.
“We are delighted to have such experts on board, who are always on hand to share their knowledge with our customers about the ‘low and slow’ method.
“We also sell South Australia’s biggest range of local and imported rubs and sauces to complement our meat and run demonstrations and masterclasses for those who want to learn more about the art of creating perfectly smoked, mouth-watering meat for friends and family.
“Our last masterclass focused on how to barbeque the Christmas ham in the home Weber and our next masterclass will demonstrate how to cook the Australia Day lamb roast. Anyone interested can enquire via Facebook,” Rik says.
Rik operates a four-tonne barbeque at the premises which is larger than most family cars and fires up the barrel smoker every week.
Sunday is a special day at The Home of Lo ‘N’ Slow, with a scrumptious breakfast menu running until 2.00pm and including classic dishes such as deep-fried chicken with bacon, waffles and golden syrup as well as brisket and egg rolls with hash browns and beef sausages.
Many of the state’s champion barbecue teams come down to cook a big barbecue platter on the weekends, and Rik will soon introduce live entertainment to add to the family vibe.
The Home of Lo ‘N’ Slow also operates a food truck that can be booked for special events, and its flame-grilled Americano-inspired menu is now available on Uber Eats.
