Your Guide to the Fringe in and around Bowden

One of the most exciting times in Adelaide is about to kick off with Fringe events around the city and the inner-west will be home to some truly original artistic experiences for all members of the family.

We are celebrating 60 years of Fringe fabulousness in 2020, so don’t miss our guide below to what’s happening in and around our neighbourhood during Australia’s biggest, open access arts festival.

Of course, these are just some of the amazing acts happening as part of Fringe. You can check out all Fringe events in the City of Charles Sturt or look up the entire 2020 Fringe program.

No second fiddles at The Gov

No matter what your musical taste, The Gov has you covered this Fringe season with stellar performances in blues, folk, motown, rock, soul and disco. Artists include ARIA inductees Richard Clapton and Ross ‘The Boss’ Wilson, as well as a number of outstanding tribute bands. If you love classic beats, big harmonies, retro vibes and soaring vocals, move your groove thang and head on down to The Gov.

Life told through canvas and celluloid

From climate change and nature to memory and belonging, this year’s local Fringe art challenges us to connect as human beings and expand our imaginations. Studio Bowden hosts Because We Cannot Not, while The Brompton Hotel comes alive with Soul Art, Art from the Pearl, Juniper Darling Photography and Expedition Africa.

Have the last laugh at the Brompton Hotel

You don’t have to go far to find a little mirth this month with romantic comedy show Love 2 Laugh and irreverent stand-up gig A Little Brent Out of Shape taking place right around the corner at the Brompton Hotel. And if you want a full night of giggles, Eddie Bannon will be hosting The Adelaide International Comedy Gala at the Thebarton Theatre in March.

Cabaret punk with an axe to grind

Vegan feminists Sharmanee and Jay are the daughters-in-law you were warned about: now they have joined forces as cabaret punk duo Plant Based Disgrace to share their tongue-in-cheek lyrics about single motherhood, dating and keeping it together. Check out their impressive vocals and ukulele prowess at one of their multiple performances at The Brompton Hotel or Hotel Richmond.

More than a rabbit in a hat

Fifteen-year-old magician, Daniel Daminato, first wowed us on Channel Ten’s Totally Wild and is now making his debut as a Fringe artist with his solo show dILLUSIONal. Prepare to be astonished in this interactive, intimate, family-friendly performance that will leave you scratching your head and asking ‘but how?’.

Living in a material world

A textural feast awaits at praxis ARTSPACE where emerging artists Kate Bohunnis, Sam Gold and Anna Gore are currently showcasing their experimental work in ceramics, painting, installation and sculpture until 6 March 2020. Material Girls is the result of an eight-month, Fringe-funded project that has seen Bohunnis, Gold and Gore work collaboratively in an open studio and influence each other’s craft. If you love the grain, quality and mystery of objects, then this is the exhibition for you.
